Diary
Thursday, 15 March 2001 -
Finland coach Antti Muurinen has named an eighteen-man
squad to face England on
24 March. The superb forward Jari Litmanen has returned to
fitness for Liverpool FC after missing almost a month with a calf strain, but
several players who otherwise probably would have been named to the squad were
unavailable for selection because of injury, including
Bolton
Wanderers' keeper Jussi
Jaaskelainen,
Genk's Juha Reini,
Barnsley's Janne Salli, Auxerre's Teemu Tainio and Derby County's Simo Valakari. Also omitted from the squad
is Aston Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman, who
started Finland's last match, the 1-0 friendly win against Luxembourg on 28
February.
Tuesday, 20 March 2001 - Janne
Saarinen, the Rosenborg defender who turned in a fine performance down the left
flank against
England last October, has withdrawn from Finland's squad due to injury.
Coach Antti Muurinen has summoned HJK Helsinki's Ville Nylund as cover.
