Diary
Friday, 25 April 2001 -
The
Football Association reveal that England will play a return fixture in
Netherlands in March 2002. England and the Netherlands already are
scheduled to meet on 15 August. It is hoped the
return fixture will serve as a World Cup 2002 preparation match for both
teams.
Sunday, 13 January 2002
- The Sunday People report that Umbro has revealed England will wear their
new World Cup red away strip in the friendly against The Netherlands.
Tuesday, 29 January 2002
- In the wake of coin-throwing by fans at the FA cup tie between Arsenal and
Liverpool on Sunday, the KNVB announce
that the 8,000 England fans who have bought tickets to the friendly against
the Netherlands will watch the match from behind giant nets. Closed-circuit television cameras will monitor crowd behaviour.
Wednesday, 30 January 2002 -
Liverpool midfielder Jamie Carragher will not be selected for the England
squad, the Football Association
have announced. Carragher has been given the mandatory three-match
ban for a red card offence involving violent conduct following his
ejection from Sunday's FA cup tie at Arsenal for tossing one of the coins thrown at him
back into the crowd. Carragher's ban begins on 10
February. Under FA policy, players under suspension from league play
for violent conduct are considered unavailable for England selection. However,
Carragher will not face further FA disciplinary action, and the police have
let him off with a warning and his club with a fine. Newcastle United midfielder Kieron Dyer may be out of action for up to six
weeks with a suspected stress fracture in his foot, his club side manager
Bobby Robson said. It is expected Dyer will be unavailable for the
friendly matches against Netherlands and Italy.
Having returned to action from long-term injury on 9 December after an absence
of 10 months, Dyer has yet to
play for England under Eriksson. He was chosen for
Eriksson's first squad for the friendly match against Spain last February, but
was forced to withdraw with a shin problem.
Thursday, 31 January 2002 -
West Ham United midfielder Michael Carrick is almost certain to be unavailable
for selection because of an
abdominal problem that will be examined by a specialist. Club manager Glenn Roeder said the problem has begun
to affect Carrick's play and could require surgery or, at the very least, a
sustained period of rest.
Friday, 1 February 2002 -
Arsenal central defender Martin Keown has a broken leg. An x-ray showed he suffered a hairline
fracture of the fibula in the midweek match against Blackburn Rovers and he
will be out of action for up to six weeks although his leg is not in a
cast. Bobby Robson confirmed that Kieron Dyer will be out of action for
six to eight weeks with a stress fracture of his foot. Leeds
United defender Jonathon Woodgate suffered a hamstring strain in
Wednesday night's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea and could be out of action for
as long as six weeks. The FA has ruled Woodgate ineligible for
England selection until he completes the community service to which he
was sentenced on his conviction for affray in December following an
attack on a student in Leeds.
Saturday, 2 February 2002 -
Arsenal defender Ashley Cole joined the growing list of players unavailable
for England after injuring his knee ligament in
todays Premiership match against Southampton. He is expected to be
out for three weeks.
Tuesday, 5 February 2002 -
Leeds United midfielder Lee Bowyer and defender Danny Mills will be
unavailable for squad selection as a result of suspensions
announced by the Football Association today following disciplinary
hearings. Bowyer, acquitted in December of criminal charges stemming
from the beating of a student in Leeds, received a six-game ban on charges of
violent conduct and using foul and abusive language to a referee. He
will not return until the 30 March match against Manchester United.
Mills, already serving a four-match ban for violent conduct, received a
two-match suspension for using foul and abusive language against a fourth
official. He will not return until the Blackburn Rovers match on 17 March.
Saturday, 9 February 2002 -
Sven-Göran Eriksson has named a 24-man squad featuring four newcomers for the
friendly match against the Netherlands on Wednesday at the Amsterdam ArenA.
The squad is the eighth Eriksson has named, for his eleventh match in
charge. Because Eriksson viewed the match as his "last
chance to experiment" before the World Cup 2002 final tournament,
there were many changes from the last squad. The
four players who received their first call to the senior squad are
defenders Wayne Bridge and Ledley King and forwards Michael Ricketts and
Darius Vassell. Three players have earned recalls. David
James, Sol Campbell and Joe Cole. John Terry, who was also under
consideration for selection, has also been ruled ineligible because of
a pending assault charge.
Monday,
11 February 2002 - England have been hit by the withdrawal of Darren
Anderton and Trevor Sinclair.
Anderton reported when England met up but has gone back to Tottenham after picking up a knock during the 2-1
home victory over Leicester City on Saturday. Sinclair was looking to step up
his claims for a place on the left side of England's midfield which has been a
problem for Eriksson to fill. A fine season so far for West Ham, despite
him having asked to go on the transfer list, has brought Sinclair into the
international picture. But the former QPR player did not meet up with
the rest of the squad after he reported he was feeling unwell. Michael Owen
became the third member of the squad to pull out with a knee ligament
injury picked up during training. David Beckham and Steve Gerrard will
face fitness tests tomorrow.
Wednesday,
13 February 2002 - Tottenham Hotspur defender Ledley King misses out on
his England debut after being laid low by a sore
throat, a FA spokesman said. King, an under-21
international, was due to make his first senior start in the friendly along
with three other previously uncapped players -- strikers Michael Ricketts and
Darius Vassell plus defender Wayne Bridge -- all of whom were named in Sven-Göran
Eriksson's starting line-up. Skipper David Beckham and fellow midfielder
Steven Gerrard, who both missed the opening England training session through
injury, were also starting the game at the Amsterdam ArenA.
