season, against Netherlands on 13 February 2002.
Diary
Tuesday,
13 March 2001 -
It has been announced by the Football Association, that the England
friendly match against Italy next year will take place at Leeds'
Elland Road ground.
Saturday, 23 March 2002
-
Sven-Göran Eriksson has named a 27-player squad for the friendly match
against Italy. Rio
Ferdinand was called although he will not play because of a knee
injury. Also called despite fitness concerns were Kieron Dyer and Ashley
Cole.
Sunday, 24 March 2002 -
Steven Gerrard injured his groin in Liverpool's Premiership match against
Chelsea and he has withdrew from the England squad. His teammate Danny
Murphy was given a late recall to the squad to replace him. Murphy made an impressive
debut as a substitute in last November's friendly match against Sweden, but
was dropped for the February friendly against Netherlands and was again overlooked
when the squad was named yesterday.
Tuesday, 25 March 2002 - Paul
Scholes becomes the latest to withdraw from the squad with a left calf injury. Eriksson
also revealed that he had called Kieron Dyer to the squad although he had agreed
with his manager, Bobby Robson not to play him. Injuries have plagued Dyer for the past year, and since he has
only recently returned to action, Eriksson felt the risk of another breakdown
was too great to play him.
