The UEFA rankings
(known as the coefficient) were calculated in November every other year at
the end of each major qualifying competition. From 2009, a new system was
introduced which included all matches from the last three major competitions
(both of the latest European Championship and World Cup competitions,
including both qualifying and finals tournaments, plus the latest completed
qualification competition) with points awarded according to the match status
i.e. more akin to the weightings in the FIFA system.
The FIFA rankings are
the last published for each year (December). Underlined rankings
are the highest (in green)
or lowest (in red) for that country at the
end of a year.
Key: DNQ = Did Not
Qualify, QF = Quarter-finals, rnd = Round, RU = Runners-up, SF =
