Navy-blue collar, edged with a thick grey stripe and a thin navy-blue stripe within. Embroidered emblem on left breast. Two embroidered navy-blue concentric diamonds on right breast, with 'umbro' in navy-blue lower-case lettering underneath. Navy-blue number one on reverse, with a grey border, outlined in navy blue. Silver shorts and navy-blue split-seam stripe, with eight squares of padding on each side of the seam. Two embroidered navy-blue concentric diamonds on right thigh, with 'umbro' in navy-blue lower-case lettering underneath. Embroidered emblem on right thigh. Grey socks with solid navy-blue diamonds across tops, edged with two navy-blue hoops.
Variations
  • For the 1986 World Cup tournament, 'FIFA WORLD CUP MEXICO'86' was displayed in navy blue directly underneath the emblem.

  • A navy-blue number one in the same font as on the reverse of the outfield shirts was worn on the left thigh of the shorts, above the Umbro logo, for the 1986 World Cup tournament games.

  • Chris Woods wore number 13 against Spain, Northern Ireland and Switzerland.

Appearances

17.69 - Peter Shilton

6.31 - Chris Woods

  • Woods came on as a 63rd-minute substitute for Shilton, with England 4-1 up against Spain in Madrid and conceded the only goal (a consolation goal for the Spanish) of his first twelve appearances for England.

Captains

5 - Peter Shilton

  • Shilton skippered the side for the last four matches of the 1986 World Cup tournament after Bryan Robson had been injured and Ray Wilkins sent off against Morocco. He was then captain again against West Germany, with Robson injured again.

There cannot be many England goalkeeping kits more famous than this one. Worn by Peter Shilton on 22 June 1986 in the World Cup quarter-final at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City, he rose to challenge Diego Maradona of Argentina and was beaten to the ball by Maradona's hand, which put Argentina into the lead. The striker later famously mocked his unwitting victims by claiming that it was the "Hand of God" and so acquired a reputation for deceit amongst England fans, despite his obvious brilliance in the second goal that clinched his team's victory on the day.

This kit was introduced for the 1986 World Cup and confirmed that grey was now the first-choice colour for England's goalkeepers. The shorts and socks had first appeared at the beginning of the season, against Romania at Wembley, when paired with the 1984 grey change jersey.

Because no other countries wore grey shirts, no change kit was necessary and this outfit was worn in every game up until the second match of the 1988 European Championship, when a new green jersey appeared. This kit did make one further appearance, however, against Sweden, in October 1988.

Strangely, Chris Woods seemed to have an aversion to the shorts in this kit, for in four of his seven appearances, he wore the same shorts as the outfield players, instead of the silver, padded-seam shorts worn by Shilton every time he donned the outfit.

The photos above are of the actual shirt worn by Shilton against Argentina and they were kindly provided to us by Simon Shakeshaft, curator of the Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection.
