In a record 125
appearances for England, Shilton faced 14 penalties (plus four in a
shootout) and only saved one spot-kick, from Andreas Brehme, whose penalty won the World Cup for West Germany, five years
later (one other kick hit the post, for the USSR in 1986).

This
grey shirt (which sometimes appears blue-ish) with black sleeves had an identical design to that of the
1984 yellow shirt. On its first two appearances, on the
1984 tour of South America, it was worn with a pair of silver shorts
(with black seams, with two embroidered black concentric diamonds on
left thigh, with 'umbro' in black lower-case lettering underneath
and an embroidered emblem on the right thigh) and
the outfield red socks, but a year later, when it was worn for every game of
the trips to Mexico and Los Angeles, the shorts and socks matched the
outfield players, apart from in the German game, when the outfield navy blue
home shorts were worn, with the red socks.
Finally, against Romania, back at Wembley, a set of
silver shorts and grey socks
turned the jersey into a full matching uniform. This combination was only
worn for that game, however, though the shorts and socks did reappear with
the new grey and
silver kit unveiled at the following year's World Cup.
There were two other games
in 1985, in which England appeared to have made a mistake. Shilton
wore this shirt in Bucharest, against Romania, possibly the third
such error against their normally yellow-shirted opponents. This one
had least significance, however. Romania chose to wear an all-red
kit, but Shilton wore the grey change shirt, presumably because the
FA had expected their opponents to wear yellow. The same situation
may also have occurred for the return fixture at Wembley, when
Romania again wore all red.
