		 Following
29 years of Umbro kits, Nike finally took the plunge and created their
first design for England. They had acquired Umbro in 2008, and before
selling on the company in December 2012, negotiated a new five-year
contract with the Football Association, in Nike's role of parent company.
However, they were unable to put the England team in a Nike kit until
late May of the FA's 150th year. This was, presumably, due to a
contractual agreement that the last Umbro England kit couldn't be
shelved after less than a year. It was a little strange, anyway, to
decorate the England kit in this way, because the England team was
'only' 141 years old, but the same thing happened for the centenary year
of 1963, so it was consistent with previous celebrations.
The fear of entrusting this particular heritage to an American
multinational was that England would become "just another country" in
the Nike catalogue, and the national team would simply slip into its
latest template that Nike had produced for its mass market.
Well, it made a rather unassuming debut, being released to the media on
20th May via Jack Wilshere returning to the Priory School in Hitchin and
selecting a 16-year-old student, Jason Kelly to model it. First
impressions were that it was just like the shirt that West Germany wore
in the 1966 World Cup Final, and, if it wasn't for the Three Lions
emblem, it could easily pass for the United States national team kit.
Putting aside the similarities to other kits for a moment, the important
things to note were that the touches of gold on the shirt were quite
fitting for the first Football Association in the world to notch up 150
years of governance. The gold riband beneath the emblem meant that for
the first time since 2001, England would not be displaying the name of
their opponents on their shirts and it would be, effectively, the same
shirt for every game (except when patches were worn for the World Cup
		qualifiers).
The colour of the shorts (obsidian) seemed like a throwback to the 1950s
and beyond, with them appearing almost as a dark grey. This was a
complete contrast to the St-George-cross-inspired themes of the last
three Umbro England kits, though the Under-21 team reverted back
to an all-white kit (including the emblem with inner gold
border, obsidian numbers and obsidian Swoosh on the white shorts) in the 2014 Toulon Tournament. One other minor thing
to point out was that the surnames on the back of this shirt were printed
in an arc for the first time in ten years. With only a year to celebrate the
anniversary, and not being able to release it until late May, this kit
was, inevitably, short-lived, though it did manage to appear in an extra
game in 2014, before making way for
		Nike's first
		World Cup edition for England.
Interestingly, it was only ever worn at Wembley, with the
		new away kit
being reserved for the only two away games during the period. There were
some very high-profile games to commemorate the year and yet again,
England gave the impression that they would be strong World Cup
contenders in the year that preceded the tournament.
From past experience, we should have known better. Winning le Tournoi in
1997, beating Germany 5-1 in 2001, beating Argentina in 2005 and
thrashing Croatia to qualify with games to spare in 2009; all generated
an unhealthy optimism for the following year's World Cup. |

Although Joe Hart is
modelling the green goalkeeping kit in this promotional shot, it was only ever
worn with the red away kit. The gold kit always accompanied the white home kit,
yet Hart wore the gold in the promotional shots with the red kit! Could this
have been a last-minute change of plan, or an administrative cock-up?
