Diary

Friday, 23 April 1909 - At the offices of The Football Association in High Holborn, the party that will represent England on the continental tour of Austria and Hungary in June has been chosen. Arthur Bridgett, Bob Crompton, Jesse Pennington, Ben Warren, Billy Wedlock and Vivian Woodward are each playing in their second continental tours. Evelyn Lintott returns after being forced to withdraw from the 1908 tour.

Saturday, 24 April 1909 - "Tom Brittleton, Wednesday's clever half-back, fell heavily in a fair and square charge with Duffy, Bury's speedy outside-left. When Brittleton rose it was seen something was amiss, and when he got to the dressing room the painful discovery was made that his collar-bone was broken. Brittleton was taken to Bury Infirmary, where he had the broken member set, and he was able to come home with the team after the match."

Monday, 17 May 1909 - "The team selected to oppose Scotland last month was chosen for the tour, but Freeman [who is touring with his club in South America]. [Harry] Stapley was invited to fill the vacancy, but as the popular Glossop amateur is to be married on June 9 he could not spare the time for both tours. Captain Vivian Woodward will, therefore, lead the attack and the elusive Fleming, who did so well against the Scots at inside-right, will again appear in that position. Brittleton's injury prevents him going as reserve, and with Fleming in the team, the reserves will be Richards (Derby County) and Halse (Manchester United)."

Bentley, president of the Football League, and the F.A. party will include Messrs. D. B. Woolfall and F. J. Wall (representatives at International Federation Congress) and G. W. Simmons."

Thursday, 27 May 1909 - "The England party travelling via Cologne, Mayence, Nuremburg, and Passau. They arrive at Vienna at 5.25 p.m." They spend their second night away in the Hotel Ersherzog Carl.
