Huddersfield were without Mike O'Grady & Ray Wilson

  Southampton vs. Cardiff City
Southampton were without Stuart Williams
Cardiff were without Ivor Allchurch & Mel Charles

The two British Championship matches also meant that second-division fixtures were postponed for the first time. Sunderland took advantage of Huddersfield's inactivity to close the gap at the top to a point and they had now gone 27 league games at Roker Park without defeat. The run stretched to 31, thanks to Brian Clough's amazing scoring rate, but a bad knee injury on Boxing Day ended his season and, ultimately, his career, before Chelsea pipped them to promotion on goal average.
