Stoke's handsome victory at Portsmouth, their sixth in succession,
sent them top. Inspired by soon-to-be-crowned Footballer of the Year,
48-year-old Stan Matthews, and recent shock signing from
first-division Burnley, Jimmy McIlroy, they stormed to the title in
their centenary year, though they only clinched promotion by a point,
with Matthews' last goal in league football securing their return to
the top flight after a ten-year absence.

Yet another away draw for Swindon kept them three points clear at the
summit, but the following Easter weekend saw them lose twice to
Peterborough and they eventually had to settle for runners-up behind
Northampton, with Peterborough slipping to sixth.

had taken Brentford to the top and they still had three games in hand
over second-placed Oldham. Their stay in the fourth division was
