The innovative Jimmy Hill, having played a major part in abolishing
the maximum wage in 1961, had retired as a player and was now
transforming the fortunes of Coventry City with his modernisation of
multiple aspects of the club. His second full season would end with
the third-division championship and by 1967, he had taken them into
the top flight for the first time in their history, before leaving for
a stellar career in broadcasting.

The only club still unbeaten in
the Football League, Gillingham won at Doncaster to go four points
clear at the top, and they were well on their way to their first-ever
promotion. This was helped, in no small measure, by only conceding
thirty league goals, and staying unbeaten at home all season in all
competitions, a run that was extended to a record 52 games and just
over two years, even though they were in a higher division in the
following season.
