Everton salvaged a point with a late equaliser at home to Wolves, but their defence of the title was running out of games, and their near-neighbours from the other side of Stanley Park, were about to relinquish them of the trophy. Meanwhile, Bolton's victory sent Ipswich, Alf Ramsey's previous employers, back into the second division after just three seasons, the first of which brought them an unbelievable league title, and Ramsey's promotion to England manager. Bolton would soon join them, however.

Crystal Palace's first home defeat in any competition for almost a year, allowed Coventry to return to the top. Palace regained the lead, but Coventry clinched the title on goal average from them after the last match, when Palace lost at home again. Coventry only scored one goal in their last three games. More surprisingly, Palace finished runners-up when they had failed to win any of their last seven league games.
