Tottenham beat Liverpool 3-0 on the previous evening where Tottenham were missing Greaves and Brown, whilst Liverpool were without Thompson and St John.
 
The three title contenders took the weekend off, whilst their biggest stars were playing at Wembley, but they were back in action, two days later, as Chelsea lost at West Ham, giving Leeds the opportunity to take a three-point lead, but it was their rivals from the other side of the Pennines who would catch them to win their first title since the Busby Babes of 1956-57.
