Bryan Robson put his injury problems behind him and returned to the England team with a typically inspiring performance in this European championship qualifier. He headed the first goal in the nineteenth minute, and Chris Waddle gave England a comfortable two-goal cushion when he scored two minutes before half-time. Chris Woods took over from injured Peter Shilton in the forty-sixth minute.  Terry Butcher, winning his fiftieth cap, was a tower of strength in the middle of the England defence alongside Mark Wright.
