Club Career
Club(s)	Played junior football in Leicester. Joined Leicester City FC as an apprentice in July 1977, turning professional in November 1978. Scoring 95 goals in 194 league appearances. His goalscoring prowess was soon noticed and he joined League Champions Everton FC in July 1985 for £800,000 plus any future transfer fee's. After a solitary season, when he score thirty times in 41 League appearances, he was taken to Spain by Terry Venables when he joined FC Barcelona in July 1986 for £2.75 million. He scored 42 goals in 103 Spanish league appearances. In July 1989, Lineker turned down the opportunity to join Manchester United FC and instead rejoined Venables at Tottenham Hotspur FC.  On 20 November 1991, after Spurs had turned down a move to Blackburn Rovers FC, Lineker agreed to end his career in the J-League, and so it was, that after 105 league appearances and 67 goals, on 9 May 1992, he joined Nagoya Grampus 8 and the newly-formed J-League of Japan. He announced his retirement in the autumn of 1994, completing 23 J-league appearances and score nine goals. He had completed 466 league appearances and 243 league goals.

Carved out a successful career in broadcasting after he hung up his boots because of a persistant toe injury. Began advertising for Walkers Crisps in 1995, a job he is still involved in. He began punditry on BBC Radio 5 Live, he crossed over to television when he became a guest pundit on BBC football's flagship programme Match Of The Day, taking over as anchor from 1999. He had already appeared as captain in BBC's They Think Its All Over, from 1995 until 2003. He headed the BBC's coverage of golf from 2003. He also provided his voice children's programme Underground Ernie for the BBC from 2006 to 2009. He anchors for the Al Jazeera Sports channel also. Following the illness and subsequent recovery of his eldest son, Lineker supported the children's cancer trust, CLIC Sargent, and has often fronted their advertisng campaigns. Lineker is now honorary vice-president of Leicester City FC.
