England were shaken by a second minute penalty goal, but cancelled it out seven minutes later when John Barnes guided the ball into the net. It took more than an hour for England to find anything approaching fluency, and then they started to pound away at the Greek defence until the inevitable goal came from Bryan Robson in the seventy-ninth minute. England had clearly lost their pulling power overseas. There were just 6,000 spectators in the huge Olympic Stadium. Robson's goal was a collector's item, a magnificent volley after Lineker had neatly nodded a John Barnes cross into his path.
