hattrick notes

Gary Lineker's hattrick, his second this season, is also England's second, not only this season, but in a Final Tournament, the first being in the 1966 World Cup Final. His substitution makes him the first player to score a hattrick, and then be replaced.

    Match Report by Mike Payne

    Match Report by Norman Giller

Gary Lineker scored all three goals in the first-half to put England on the way to an exhilarating victory and into the second round of the World Cup finals. Bobby Robson was forced to make changes - both tactical and in personnel - because of injuries and the Ray Wilkins suspension, and Lineker looked more comfortable playing in a 4-2-4 formation. 'People can say what they like about me,' said a triumphant Bobby Robson, 'but never ever accuse my players of lacking character. This was a phenomenal performance given the pressure they were under. Phenomenal!'
