    Match Report by Mike Payne

    Match Report by Norman Giller

There was a tame start to England's 1990 World Cup campaign when they  were held to a goalless draw by a Swedish side that came with the main objective of not getting beaten. England's forwards were all out of touch in front of goal, and even a barnstorming display by skipper Bryan Robson failed to give them the key to victory. Goalkeeper Peter Shilton was unemployed for long periods, but proved an unbeatable barrier when the Swedes suddenly stepped up the pace in the second-half  and threatened to dismantle the previously sound England defence. The clamour for Bobby Robson to be sacked was given new impetus. 'In the name of God go!' pleaded one headline, lifting the famous historical quote from Oliver Cromwell.
