    Match Report by Norman Giller

Graham Taylor made Gary Lineker captain for his first match as England manager, and it was the new skipper who scored the match-winning goal in the last minute of the first-half. David Platt had a shot beaten out, Paul Gascoigne played the ball back in and Lineker swooped to put the finishing touch from six yards. Taylor, who had never played football at the highest level, stuck with a Robson-look selection for his opening matches, bringing in only Arsenal right-back Lee Dixon for the second of his twenty-two caps.
