A Gary Lineker penalty after his header had been handled on the line gave England the lead in the fortieth minute of this opening European championship qualifier. Peter Beardsley, substituting for injured Lineker in the fifty-sixth minute, made the points safe with a second goal in the eighty-ninth minute.  It was a cracker from Beardsley, his shot curling away from the diving goalkeeper and still picking up pace on its way into the net. So far so good for Taylor, and his willingness to talk openly after the game made him an instant hit with the media.
