Diary
Thursday, 1 October 1999 -
Dennis Wise has earned an England call-up for
the first time in three and a half years. Manchester United striker Andrew Cole
has not been drafted into the squad though despite scoring a spectacular
over-head kick in United's Champions League 2-1 win against Marseille on
Wednesday night. Also in the squad are
first time call-ups for Leicester City midfielder Steve Guppy, West Ham United
striker Trevor Sinclair and a return for Paul Ince. Guppy, signed from
first division Port Vale two years ago, is one of the countries most gifted left
sided midfielders and has rode a crest of popularity to today's England call-up.
Chelsea striker Dennis Wise last played for England in a 1-0 friendly match
against Bulgaria prior to Euro 96. He was picked by then coach Terry Venables,
but was never chosen by penultimate England boss Glenn Hoddle.
