Diary

Tuesday, 22 January 2013 - New Brazil manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has named his first Brazil squad since his reappointment of the national team, recalling the likes of Ronaldinho, QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar and Luis Fabiano. There was, though, no space for Kaka in the selection, compounding a bad month for the Real Madrid star after the collapse of a proposed loan move to former side AC Milan. Among those called to the squad are Spain-based defenders Miranda and Filipe Luis, who both have not played for Brazil since 2009, both of Atlético Madrid.  They have been key to their side's fine form in La Liga and were heavily tipped for inclusion. Also included is Bayern Munich defender Dante, a member of one of European football's meanest defences this season. There was, however, no room for his Brazilian colleagues Rafinha and Luiz Gustavo. Hulk retains his place in the squad, despite a disappointing campaign in Russia, while Fred and Arouca are complete the domestic inclusions. Lazio star Hernanes, too, is recalled in midfield. Among the notable absentees tipped for consideration are Shakhtar duo of Willian and Fernandinho, Porto's Fernando, Internacional's Leandro Damiao and Manchester United's Rafael.

Friday, 1 February 2013 - Hernanes has been withdrawn from the squad after sustaining a head injury whilst playing for Lazio, in the Italia Cup match against Juventus FC. His place has gone to to the Jean, from Fluminese. Incidentally, Hernanes and Jean both played together as teenagers at São Paulo.

Monday, 4 February 2013 - David Luiz is a doubt for the match against England. The 25-year-old defender last featured as a substitute in the Chelsea's 0-0 draw at Swansea City, but ended the game limping and hasn't played since.  David Luiz is awaiting confirmation on the extent of his injury and could miss out on lining up alongside club team-mates Oscar and Ramires.  "I didn't play for three matches because my calf still hurts. Today I'm going through some exams with [Brazil's physician José] Runco, he asked me. I'm training at 100% already and I hope to play for Selecao."
