Diary
Tuesday, 14 May 2013 -
Former
Ballon d'Or winners Kaka and Ronaldinho have both
been left out of the Brazil squad for this summer's Confederations Cup.
The Real Madrid midfielder and Atlético Mineiro attacker are among a long list
of Luiz Felipe Scolari's culled casualties. Corinthians striker Alexandre Pato,
Sao Paulo playmaker Ganso and Manchester United full-back Rafael have also been
omitted from the Selecao's 23-strong
squad for the tournament. There is no room for Chelsea's Ramires but Blues
team-mates David Luiz and Oscar have been called upon, as has relegated QPR
goalkeeper Julio Cesar. Bayern Munich duo Dante and Luiz Gustavo have both
been summoned, while Neymar is the star attraction in a stellar attacking
quintet that also features Leandro Damiao, Hulk, Lucas Moura and Fred.
Barcelona full-back Dani Alves has a place in Felipao's
squad despite being criticised this year for his form dropping, while Thiago
Silva has secured a spot in the home tournament having ledc Paris Saint-Germain
to success this season.
Brazil will play only two matches before the
Confederations Cup, against England on June 2 at the new Maracana and against
France in the southern city of Porto Alegre on June 9. The national team is
coming off a disappointing 2-2 draw with Chile at Mineirao Stadium last month,
when Ronaldinho and the rest of the team left the pitch under loud boos by
nearly 50,000 home fans. Scolari has called up 44 players for five matches since
retaking Brazil's reins in December. He had a difficult start, losing to England
2-1, drawing Italy 2-2 and Russia 1-1 before beating Bolivia 4-0 for his first
win.
Friday, 17 May 2013 - Queen's
Park Rangers' goalkeeper Júlio César has confirmed he will
leave the relegated club this summer, but was coy on a future destination.
He has reportedly attracted attention from a number of clubs, including
Arsenal and AC Milan. The 33-year-old was one of the few QPR players to
come out of the relegation season with any credit, after making 24 league
appearances and keeping five clean sheets.
Thursday, 30 May 2013 -
England's friendly with Brazil on Sunday has been suspended over safety
concerns at the recently renovated Maracana stadium. A court order on
Thursday ruled that the game cannot go ahead. But senior officials at the
Football Association have said they have received assurances from their
Brazilian counterparts that the fixture will be played as scheduled. The
Rio de Janeiro government has appealed against the court's decision. "All
safety requirements for the friendly between Brazil and England have been
complied with and, because of a bureaucratic failure, the appraisal from
the public ministry that proves the compliance with the rules on safety at
the Maracana have not been sent to Suderj," the Rio government said in a
statement.
Friday, 31 May 2013 -
A duty judge later revoked the suspension despite Rio's state prosecutors
saying that there are dangerous materials at the venue, including rocks,
pieces of metal and pavement, and that these could pose a threat to the
public.
