Diary
Friday, 23 November 2012 -
England will play Brazil in a friendly at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana
Stadium next summer, local officials said. The fixture will take place on 2 June
at the arena which will go on to host both the 2014 World Cup final and the
opening and closing ceremonies of the Rio Olympic Games two years later. The
friendly will be Brazil's first game at the 78,000-capacity Maracana after
substantial modernisation work.
Thursday,
16 May 2013 - Roy Hodgson has
named his England squad for the upcoming double-header with Republic of Ireland
and Brazil and has called up Reading's Alex McCarthy for the first time.
The Royals stopper, who has previous international experience at Under-21s
level, comes in after impressive displays at the Madejski Stadium. He joins
other 'keepers Joe Hart and Ben Foster on the 22-man list. Liverpool's
in-form striker Daniel Sturridge is included in the squad, too, alongside the
Reds' on-loan forward Andy Carroll.
Frank Lampard, Gary Cahill and
Ashley Cole, fresh from Europa League success with Chelsea, are also in
Hodgson's line-up for the games at Wembley on 29 May and in Rio on 2 June.
Monday, 20 May 2013 - Manchester
City midfielder Jack Rodwell has been called into the England squad.
The 22-year-old has endured an injury-plagued debut campaign with
City, but returned for the last month of the season and scored both
goals in the Blues 3-2 defeat by Norwich on Sunday.
Tuesday, 21 May 2013 - Andy Carroll
has withdrawn from the England squad. No-one will be drafted in
to replace the 24-year-old who has been ruled out because of a heel
injury. England's squad are expected to meet at St George's Park
on Sunday.
Sunday, 26 May 2013 - Tom Cleverley
has withdrawn from the England squad after not recovering from the
calf-injury sustained in Manchester United's final game of the season.
Monday, 27 May 2013 - Kyle
Walker has withdrawn from the squad. Walker reported to St.
George's Park with an injury yesterday which was assessed by the Club
England medical staff. The Tottenham Hotspur defender will be
unavailable for the two upcoming matches and has returned to his club.
There will be no replacement at this time.
Tuesday, 28 May 2013 - Chelsea
left-back Ashley Cole will captain England for the friendly with the
Republic of Ireland as a tribute for reaching 100 appearances. Roy Hodgson
had told the news conference Cole would lead the team out, but Frank Lampard would be captain in Steven Gerrard's absence. But the England
camp later insisted Cole was skipper. "He has been a fantastic
servant, not just for Arsenal and Chelsea but for England as well."
Wednesday, 29 May 2013 - England
draw 1-1 with Republic of Ireland. Frank Lampard equalising a Shane
Long opener. The one concern is Daniel Sturridge, who pulled up while
chasing Glenn Whelan back into a defensive position, he instantly
signalled that he was in trouble, and was taken away on a stretcher
after being examined on the touchline. He went for a scan, which
showed ligament damage. He was withdrawn from the squad to go to
Brazil.
Thursday, 30 May 2013 - England's
friendly with Brazil on Sunday has been suspended over safety concerns
at the recently renovated Maracana stadium. A court order on Thursday
ruled that the game cannot go ahead. But senior officials at the
Football Association have said they have received assurances from
their Brazilian counterparts that the fixture will be played as
scheduled. The Rio de Janeiro government has appealed against the
court's decision. "All safety requirements for the friendly between
Brazil and England have been complied with and, because of a
bureaucratic failure, the appraisal from the public ministry that
proves the compliance with the rules on safety at the Maracana have
not been sent to Suderj," the Rio government said in a statement.
Friday, 31 May 2013 -
A duty judge later revoked the suspension despite Rio's state
prosecutors saying that there are dangerous materials at the venue,
including rocks, pieces of metal and pavement, and that these could
pose a threat to the public. The England squad have already arrived in
Rio.
Danny Welbeck's hopes of facing
Brazil appear to be over after he limped out of training tonight.
The Manchester United striker could only take part in the warm up.
Welbeck had hoped to recover from injury to face Scolari's side, but
he faces further treatment on a troublesome thigh injury. Welbeck
missed Wednesday's game against the Republic of Ireland and Hodgson
hoped to use him against Brazil. Instead Jermain Defoe, who came on as
a substitute against the Irish, is now in contention. Despite fears
over a nagging injury he took part in a full session and could even
start against Brazil.
Saturday, 1 June 2013 -
Danny Welbeck has been ruled out of England's friendly against Brazil
at the Maracana with a knee injury.
