Playing Career

Club(s)
Played Sunday League football with Senrab FC and also a product of the FA's National School of Excellence at Lilleshall, Defoe was signed by Charlton Athletic FC Youth in 1997. Signed for West Ham United FC in July 1999 for £1.15 million and was sent out on loan to AFC Bournemouth from 25 October 2000. After returning to the Hammers, Defoe signed for Tottenham Hotspur FC on 2 February 2004 for £6m, rising to £7m, depending on 'specific performance criteria'. He left for Portsmouth FC on 31 January 2008 initially on loan, but the deal was made permanent on 5 February 2008. Defoe returned to White Hart Lane on 9 January 2009 for a fee around £15 million. Then, on 10 January 2014, Defoe left Spurs for Toronto FC, in the MLS, effective from 28 February 2014. After less than a year, and eleven goals in nineteen MLS appearances, Sunderland AFC signed him on 16 January 2015 for an undisclosed fee, plus Jozy Altidore, up until the Wearside club were relegated in May 2017, which released a clause in his contract, allowing him to join AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer, on 29 June 2017, before, on 6 January 2019, Defoe joined Steven Gerrard's Rangers FC in an eighteen month loan deal. On 25 January 2020, the deal was made permanent, effective from the 2020 summer. He has made making 24+thirty SPFL appearances, and scoring 25 goals. On 8 June 2021, he became a player-coach at Rangers and was released on 12 January 2022. On 31 January, Defoe rejoined Sunderland AFC until the end of the season, however, he announced his retirement from playing on 24 March 2022.
