Playing Career

Club(s)
Signed schoolboy forms with Everton FC in October 1994, before signing a Youth contract in January 1999.  After making his Premier League debut as a 16 year-old, Rooney signed professional terms in December 2001. After announcing his 'once a blue, always a blue' motto, he then joined Manchester United FC on 31 August 2004 for a £25.6 million, and that was after Everton had turned down a £20 million approach from Newcastle United FC. In February 2014, Rooney signed a new contract with United that was worth £300,000 per week, making him the highest paid footballer in Britain. He was appointment as club Captain from the 2014-15 season. On 9 July 2017, Rooney returned to his childhood club, Everton FC, on a free transfer. After just one season, Rooney joined MLS side, DC United, on 2 July 2018. He made 21 MLS appearances, scoring twelve. On 6 August 2019, Rooney agreed a return to England as player-coach of Derby County FC, effective from the new year. He was installed as captain immediately. He effectively retired from playing on 27 November 2020 as he took over the manager's role at County as their caretaker. He announced his permanent retirement on 15 January 2021.

League Honours

Rooney began his coaching career at Derby County FC on 30 November 2019, where he also kept his position as player and captain. Almost a year later, 19 November 2020, Rooney was placed in temporary charge at County following the sacking of Philipp Cocu, alongside Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker. Following the appointment of Steve McClaren as Technical Director at County, three days later, Rooney was put in charge of team selection, as he effectively retired himself from playing. On 15 January 2021, the appointment was made permanent. On 8 May, the final day of the 2020-21 season, Rooney kept County in the Championship. He turned down an approach from Everton FC for their vacant managerial position in January 2022. Derby went down at the end of the 2021-22 season because of a points penalty. On 24 June, Rooney resigned as County manager. On 11 July, he became the manager of MLS side DC United, until he left by mutual consent on 8 October 2023 after failing to get them into the MLS play-offs. He was appointed as the new manager of Birmingham City FC on 11 October, but was less than successful in turning their fortunes around and was sacked two days into 2024.

England Disgrace

Whatever the talent Rooney possessed in his younger days, he just could not stay out of the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Countless allegations of sleeping with prostitutes. Constant rants at the media and at his own supporters had distanced himself from the support of his own. Which had resulted in numerous fines and an equal amount of suspensions. He appears to have matured and his gamesmanship improved, hand in hand with fatherhood.
