Evolution of the youngest player

In the first ever match on 30 November 1872, John Maynard was the youngest of the eleven debutants, and the only teenager... at 19 years and 257 days.

In the second match on 8 March 1873,
Walpole Vidal played as one of two half-backs, he was 19 years and 186 days, taking 71 days off the record.

Billy Mosforth, on 3 March 1877, took to the field sixty days after becoming a nineteen year old. Removing 126 days from the record in the process.

It was two years later when the record took grasp and held for 123 years and ten months (45,238 days), when James Prinsep, aged just 17 years and 253 days, was chosen to play against the Auld Enemy, Scotland, on 5 April 1879.  The record was broken by Wayne Rooney on 12 February 2003 when he was a second half substitute against Australia. And three years after that, Theo Walcott shaved 36 days off the record when he played against Hungary on 30 May 2006.

Before Rooney become the youngest competitive player, as well as starter, against Turkey on 2 April 2003, Duncan Edwards held the record when he debuted as an 18-year old in a Home Championship match against Scotland on 2 April 1955. He in turn had taken the record from Arthur Brown, who was 18 years and 329 days old against Wales on 29 February 1904.  Billy Bassett (1888) and Thelwell Pike (1886) before him. James Forrest in 1884. Ahead of William Bromley-Davenport, and the very first Billy Rose.

Two or more teenagers together (involving an 18 year old)

Teenagers James Prinsep (17) and Harold Morse (19) debuted in the same match on 5 April 1879.
On 26 February 1881 against Wales, three teenagers made their first England appearance. Tot Rostron (17) , Jimmy Brown (18) and Arthur Bambridge (19).
In the following match, on 12 March 1881 against Scotland, Tot Rostron (17) and Clem Mitchell (19) were both making their second appearances.
On 18 February 1882, in the first meeting with Ireland, Robert King (19) also made his debut, while Jimmy Brown made his second appearance (19).

Michael Owen (18) and Rio Ferdinand (19) both played together in their second appearances on 25 March 1998. They were also substitutes together when the faced Belgium in May 1998, although by then, Owen was on five cap's Ferdinand, his third. Owen was there again when Ferdinand was winning his fourth cap, against Luxembourg on 14 October 1998. OWen was winning his twelfth, the last as an 18-year old.

Wayne Rooney (17) made his debut alongside Jermaine Jenas (19) against Australia on 12 February 2003.
Later in the year, 16 November 2003, Rooney, now 18, and winning his ninth cap, played alongside the debuting Glen Johnson (19) for thirty minutes.

Micah Richards (18) and Aaron Lennon (19) played together for ten minutes against Israel on 24 March 2007, and for 61 minutes in the follow-up against Andorra for days later.

Luke Shaw (18) debut as a second half substitute was spent during Raheem Sterling's (19) second appearance against Denmark on 5 March 2014. They spent ten minutes together in Shaw's next appearance and Sterling's fourth against Ecuador on 4 June 2014. Finally, they had 28 minutes together in the final World Cup Finals group game in 2014 against Costa Rica.

Two eighteen year olds together featured for the first time when since Rostron and Brown in February 1881 when Callum Hudson-Odoi came on as a 70th minute substutute, and he joined Jaden Sancho on the field against Czech Republic at Wembley on 22 March 2019.

Not many eighteen year olds have featured for England. For example, Theo Walcott never played again for over a year after his debut, and neither did Raheem Sterling. James Prinsep only ever played one match. Of the seventeen year olds, Tot Rostron played once more, whereas Rooney had made nineteen England appearances before he turned nineteen himself. The total number of appearances made up of players eighteen years and under only adds up to 66.
