Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Woodgate began his career at Middlesbrough FC, but moved to Leeds United
AFC to become a trainee, signing professional forms on 13 May 1997. After
breaking into the first team... |
Woodgate was banned from England selection
between 2000 and 2002, for being involved in a fracas
outside a Leeds nightclub. |
|
....he signed for
Newcastle United FC for £9 million on 31 January 2003. But was
soon on his way to Real Madrid CF in
August 2004 for £13.4 million. After yet more injury-plagued seasons, making just nine La Liga
appearances, Woodgate returned home to
Teesside on 30 August 2006 for a season-long loan stint with Middlesbrough
FC,
though on 5th February 2007, it was announced by Madrid that the deal
would eventually be permanent, and it was, on 26 April, for a fee close to
£7 million. Eight months later, Woodgate left the 'boro
to join
Tottenham Hotspur FC, for another £7 million, on 28 January 2008, after rejecting
a return to
Newcastle United FC. He
was released on 16 June 2011. he joined Stoke City FC on 11 July, before returning home to Middlesbrough
FC
on 6 July 2012, to become club captain. He helped Middlesbrough clinch
promotion to the Premier League at the end of 2015-16, although he did not
feature, and he was released shortly after. |

Management
Career |
Club(s) |
On 11 August 2016, Woodgate was
appointed as a scout for Liverpool FC, overseeing the regions of Spain and
Portugal. However, on 31 March 2017, he returned to Middlesbrough FC and
appointed as an assistant coach, a position that lasted barely over six
weeks. As the club were relegated from the Premier League and another
change of coaching staff, Woodgate joined the Academy as the assistant
coach to the under-18 team. Following another change of coaching staff, in
December 2017, Woodgate returned to his position of First Team assistant
coach, until another change occurred on 14 June 2019, this time with
Woodgate himself taking the helm, until he himself was sacked on 23 June
2020. |
