Diary
Wednesday, 14 May 2014 -
Manchester United winger
Antonio Valencia is the star name in Ecuador's provisional 30-man squad for next
month's World Cup in Brazil. Felipe Caicedo, now with United Arab Emirates club
Al Jazira, has also been included, as has 35-year-old midfielder Edison Mendez,
Ecuador's third-most capped player. Head coach Reinaldo Rueda must finalise his
squad before the cut-off point of June 2.
Saturday, 17 May 2014 - Ecuador
took an early lead against Netherlands, but the friendly match finished in
a 1-1 draw. Ecuador's own World Cup plans were dealt massive blows
either side of half time as strikers Felipe Caicedo and his replacement
Fidel Martinez both had to be carried off.
Saturday, 31 May 2014 - Ecuador
are beaten 3-1 by Mexico at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington in front of
84,876 spectators. The game was marred by an horrific injury to Luis
Montes two minutes after he scored the opening goal. His leg was broken in
a collision with Segundo Castillo, who was also substituted.
Tuesday, 3 June 2014 -
Manchester United midfielder Antonio Valencia has been named in Ecuador's
World Cup squad. Stuttgart midfielder Carlos Gruezo, 19, who made his first
two appearances last month, is also in Reinaldo Rueda's squad. Midfielder Segundo
Castillo also made the cut from the provisional squad despite suffering a
knee injury during Saturday's friendly against Mexico. There were three
uncapped domestic-based strikers in the 30-man squad - Cristian Penilla,
Angel Mena and Armando Wila - but they have all been dropped. Emelec
defender Jhon Narvaez, 19-year-old Fortuna Düsseldorf defender Cristian
Ramirez, Emelec midfielder Pedro Quinonez and Chivas USA midfielder
Oswaldo Minda are the others to miss out.
