Notes
The
Football League unveiled its list of "100 League
Legends" on 4 August 1998, as its centenary season was about to
begin. The selection panel consisted of national football journalists,
who used contemporary press reports to evaluate the merits of players from the
league's early years. Among the 100 were 63 England players. Among
the most notable omissions were Jack
Charlton, Trevor Brooking, David Seaman, Ian Wright and Peter Beardsley.
Bryon Butler, the late football journalist and historian
who left us the elegantly crafted 100 Seasons of League Football, said
of the selection: "We have picked 100 names, we could have picked
200. Jack Charlton, for instance, would fit on that list impeccably and
nobody would quibble at it. So would the likes of [Ron] 'Chopper' Harris and
Ian Wright. We're fairly comfortable with our choices but it is only a
matter of opinion and we will not feel at all aggrieved if other people differ
with us. We
were looking for that x-factor as well as pure achievement."
