Timeline |
|
John Thomas
Alderson |
Birth |
Sunday, 23 November
1890 at 16 Temperance Street in Grahamsley, Crook, County Durham. |
|
registered in Auckland January-March 1891 |
Birth notes |
Most history books state 28 November 1891, but the only John Thomas registered
was the one mentioned above. In fact, the only Crook-born Alderson is the
one mentioned below. |
|
According to the 1891 census,
John Thos. is a three month-old only son to 'Charlotte' Jane (née Mitchinson)(b.White
Lea, Crook, late 1849), who already has a nine year-old daughter,
Charlotte Emily (b.Crook, 1 October 1882). Jane is a widow, and the three of them live at 16
Temperance Terrace in Crook, County Durham. Evidently, John Thomas'
father, Richard (b.1863) is Charlotte Jane's second husband (m.spring
1882). She had previously married Thomas Parkin (b.July 1847, m.early
1867, d.2 February 1881), with whom she had three children, William
(b.1868), Barbara (b.1 June 1869) and James (b.21 September 1873). Jane's parents,
James (b.1827, d.28 November 1907) and Charlotte (b.1829, d.18 October
1906) Mitcheson, live at
number eight with William and James. Barbara married Herbert Baldry just
before this census was returned. |
|
According to the 1901 census, John T. is now a ten year-old living with his mother, Jane
who has now
remarried (late 1891), to James Richardson (b.1862 in Crook), a stoneman
in the coal mine. They live in 20 Green Lane Crescent, Harton, South Shields. James, a coal miner, and Jane have their own son,
John's half-brother, six-year old Robert Walton (b.1895 Grahamsley).
Charlotte, now 18, is still living at 16 Temperance Street, but now with
her grandparents, James and Charlotte. |
|
According to the 1911 census,
20 year-old John is now a coal mine putter, still living with his
mother (and his stone miner step-father (b.1862) at The Holmes, back in Crook. |
Marriage |
to Catherine Casey
(b.late 1884 in Crook] Catherine is the only Crook-born female
marrying a John T. Alderson. |
|
registered as John T. in Auckland April-June 1916 |
As a cautionary note, although it states that
John & Kate are both Crook-born, it also states incorrect ages (b.Nov
1895) and (b.Dec 1895) |
According to the 1921 census, John is now a
professional footballer, for Crystal Palace FC, is now married to Kate, (there
are no children recorded) and the two of them are visitors at the home of Joseph,
a coal mine hewer,
and Annie Lumsden at 1 Arthur Terrace in Billy Row. Newspaper
reports confirm Alderson returned to Crook in March 1931...and then?... |
Is he, according to the 1939 register, the John that is married to Catherine
(his birthdate 23 November 1889 is precisely a year too early - If this is the correct Alderson,
he is
living at 66 Chidswell Lane in Dewsbury. and if
so, then he was charged with
theft (of paper) shortly after this register was taken. |
Death |
Thursday, 2 July 1959, en route to Dewsbury Hospital,
Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The only death of a John
Thomas Alderson that fell in the correct age bracket, that is, 68 years
old. |
aged 68 years 221 days |
if correct, then registered in Dewsbury July-September 1959 |
Probate |

Death notes |
It was
NOT 17 February
1972, registered in Sunderland, March 1972. That register states that this John
Thomas Alderson was born in July 1908. nor could it be June
1959 in Darlington, this John T. Alderson was born on 2 April
1892 and had been married to Margaret. |
