  Often found in the record books under Syd Bishop.... but he was born a Sidney, married as a Sidney, and died as a Sidney. Only his 1901 census, transcribed by a government official, named him 'Sydney'.
Birth 10 February 1900 in Stepney, London [registered in Mile End Old Town, March 1900].
 

According to the 1901 census, Sydney Mc. the youngest of five children to Edmund and Scotswoman Maria (née Ogston). They live at 135 Landsown Road in Ilford, and his father is an Engineer Fitter at the Royal Mint. With two servants.

 

According to the 1911 census, Sidney Macdonald now has two younger brothers, Roy and Dennis, with their parents, living at 65 Henley Road, Ilford. His father still a Engineer Fitter.

  According to the 1921 census, Sidney Macdonald is an artifact engineer for the Royal Mint, and the second of four sons still living at home with their parents at 65 Henley Road.
Marriage to Minnie Rosina Brockhouse, on 28 April 1924, at St. Clement's Church in Ilford [registered in Romford, Essex, June 1924]. They had one son, Donald Brian (b.9 May 1927 d.13 October 1946)
  Passenger List's revealed that Sid Bishop was on the RMS Asturias, leaving Southampton for Buenos Aires on 1 May 1929. Stated as a footballer and travelling second class with the rest of Chelsea FC squad. He returned from the tour of South America between the 12th-26th July. Address stated as 2 Llandudno Villas in Barking
According to the 1939 register, Sidney, a manager of a licensed victualler, is married to Minnie R., the manageress, and they live at 'The Porcupine', at 48 Charing Cross Road in the Westminster area of London.
Death 4 May 1949 at his home, The Admiral Keppel, 77 Fulham Road in Chelsea, aged 49 years 83 days [registered in Chelsea, June 1949].

Playing Career

Club(s) Played his early football as a centre-forward with London schools and also with the RAF during his war years. He played local football with Ilford FC, before being signed by Crystal Palace FC and assisting the reserve side, where he moved to a more permanent half-back position. He moved on to West Ham United FC in May 1920. Leicester City FC broke their transfer record for a fee paid when they paid £3500 for the Hammers captain on 5 November 1926. He made 49 league appearances, scoring seven times. Joined Chelsea FC on 18 June 1928 for a £4500 transfer fee and after making 103 league appearances, he retired in May 1933.
