According to the 1881 census, John Thomas is the youngest of three children to Joseph and Jane Ann (née Gladstone), living at Cross Row in Seaton Burn. His father is a coal miner.

 

According to the 1891 census, John T. now has a younger brother and still with his parents at 1 High Cross Row in Seaton Burn. His father is a deputy overman in the colliery.

 

According to the 1901 census, John Carr is a 22 year old professional footballer, boarding with the McDonalds in 239 Beaconsfield Street in Elswick. He is boarding with fellow United player, John Fraser.

After retiring, joined the Newcastle United FC coaching staff as an assistant trainer. However, in early 1920...
"Jack Carr, the old Newcastle back, who has been assistant trainer to the St. James Park club, has gone to Sweden as a coach to the Gothenburg club"
Then he was the successful candidate out of eighty to be appointed player-manager of Blackburn Rovers FC on 17 February 1922. Appointed secretary-manager from 1 October 1925, following the death of Robert Middleton. He resigned on 22 December 1926.
