Started his career at Scotswood FC, where he was spotted by and signed by
Chesterfield FC and made 121 league
appearances, scoring 67 goals, joined Newcastle United FC in June
1938 for an £8,500 transfer fee. Leicester City FC tried to sign him
during the following season, but Clifton refused to go.
After 29 league appearances and fifteen goals, curtailed by the
war, Clifton joined Grimsby Town in 1947 and
made 69 league appearances, scoring 23, until he retired in 1949. |
