Started
his career playing with Ellesmere Port schools and joined Ellesmere Port
Wednesday FC, from where he signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in
February 1934. Guested for Irish side Glentoran FC in 1942.
After 152 league appearances, in which he
scored twice, he
announced his retirement from playing on 30 May 1947, however, following a
caution in April 1947 against Manchester United FC, he was suspended by
the FA on 3 July for fourteen days, effective from 18 August, the day
before he was appointed the club's assistant to Ted Vizard. Despite this,
on the 29
July, his manager, Major Frank Buckley had to release a press statement saying that Cullis was not going to Hull City AFC. |

Club(s): Appointed assistant manager at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on 19 August
1947. Took the step up to management in June 1948 and remained in that
position until September 1964. It wasn't until December 1965 that
Birmingham City FC enticed Cullis out of retirement, until March 1970. |
