Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Began
playing local junior football before joining Durham City FC as a
professional during 1919-20 season. At the beginning of the next season,
Hill had joined Plymouth Argyle FC in September 1920.
After 101 league appearances and ten goals,
Burnley FC then paid a £5450 transfer fee for him on 15 May
1923, ahead of Bolton Wanderers FC,
Liverpool FC, Aston Villa FC and Manchester City FC, returning
the fee with thirteen goals in 184 league appearances, becoming
club captain. Newcastle United FC signed Hill on 26
October 1928 for a £8100 fee, ahead of a bid from Sunderland AFC. His
time at St. James' Park was spent on the transfer list, partially at his
own request, and also because the club placed him there. Stoke City FC
offered £750 for his services in October 1929, and Tottenham Hotspur
FC made enquiries a month later. The Tynesiders retained him and within
three years, his asking price dropped considerably,
playing 74 league appearances, scoring twice, when Bradford City FC
paid £600 for his signature on 12 June 1931. He lasted
just five months, one goal in eight league
appearances, when Hull City AFC swapped a player, Stan Alexander,
for him on 21 November 1931. He became club captain once more and retired
in April 1934 when he was appointed manager at City,
having made 94 league appearances and scoring twice. |
