Timeline

  Joseph Hodkinson
Birth Friday, 3 May 1889 in Lancaster, Lancashire
  registered in Lancaster April-June 1889

According to the 1891 census, Joseph is the youngest of three children, all sons, to Henry and Alice Ann (née Brewer). His father is a smith striker and they live at 8 Lodge Place in Lancaster.

According to the 1901 census, Joseph now has two younger sisters, and they, along with his older brother and parents, live at 16 Alexandra Road in Lancaster. His father is now a waggon wheel glutter.

According to the 1911 census, Joseph is now a labourer (footballer), boarding along with George Hampton at the home of Emily Jacques at 179 High Street in Glossop.

Marriage to Ethel Collins, on Tuesday 1.00pm, 2 June 1914, at St. James' Church in Whitfield, Derbyshire, he is a professional footballer and both are living at 49 Duke Street in Whitfield
  registered in Glossop April-June 1914
"HODKINSON—COLLINS.
"Much local interest was manifested in a marriage which took place at St. James' Church, Whitfield, at one o'clock on Wednesday, the parties to the sacred covenant being Miss Ethel Collins, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Collins, of Duke Street, Glossop, and Mr. Joe Hodkinson, the well known international footballer, whose home is at Lancaster. Mr. Hodkinson is widely known in the Glossop district, having played with the Glossop football team for several seasons. From Glossop he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers, with whom he has met with much success. In addition to helping the Rovers to secure the championship of the 1st Division of the English League, Mr. Hodkinson gained perhaps the highest distinction with a footballer covets—his cap against Scotland. In the circumstances, then, it was not surprising that St. James' Church, was well filled during the solemnisation of the nuptials, and that the streets in the immediate vicinage of the church were quite agog with mild excitement.
"The ceremony was performed by the Vicar (the Rev. W. M. Martin-Ellis). The bride, who was given away by Mr. George Rawlinson Goldthorpe (of Hadfield), was prettily attired in grey silk eoline, and wore a tastefully designed cream hat, with ostrich feather. She carried a magnificent shower bouquet, composed of white roses, lilies of the valley, and maiden hair fern. Her attendant bridesmaids were Miss Maggie Hodkinson (the bridegroom's sister), and Miss Alice Collins (sister of the bride). Both bridesmaids wore becoming sand coloured costumes and hats en suite. They also carried handsome bouquets of pink carnations and maiden hair fern, which, like the one carried by the bride, were the gift of the bridegroom. The duties of best man were entrusted to the brides youngest brother, Mr. S. Collins. There were many friends present in church of both families, including Mrs. Hodkinson (the mother of the bridegroom, Lancaster), Messrs. Harry and Wm. Hodkinson (brothers, Lancaster), Mrs. and Miss S. Cross (Blackburn), Mr. F. Billington (Blackburn), etc., etc.
"After the wedding ceremony the bridal party, who had been conveyed to church in motor landaulette, supplied by the Glossop Carriage Company, left for the wedding reception, which was subsequently held at Wood's Reading Room, Glossop. Meanwhile, a merry peal was rung on the Church bells as the members of the party left the ediface. At Wood's Reading Room upwards of 80 guests attended the festivities, the catering arrangements for which were satisfactorily carried out by E. Swindells and Son, confectioners, High Street East, Glossop. Later in the day Mr. and Mrs. Hodkinson, who had received a long list of costly and useful souvenirs of the suspicious occasion, left for Blackpool, where the honeymoon is being spent. Subsequently they will take up residence at Ashville Terrace, Blackburn."
- Glossop-dale Chronicle, Friday, 5 June 1914
Their marriage registration states they married on 2nd June, however, the newspaper report states that it was the 3rd.
Children Joe and Ethel Hodkinson have one daughter together. Irene (b.summer 1915)
Neither can be found in the 1921 census.
His father died in 1922, his mother in 1932.
According to the 1939 register, Joseph, a general labourer and tinsmith, and Ethel remain married and are living at 65 Ulster Road in Lancaster.
Death Friday night, 18 June 1954 at his home on Cork Road, in Bowerham, Lancaster, Lancashire.
aged 65 years 46 days registered in Lancaster April-June 1954
