Began with Epsom & Ewell FC Youth side
before becoming a Crystal Palace FC trainee. He signed
professionally on 24 December 1987. Made just three league
appearances before he was loaned to Aldershot FC on
11 January 1990, making eleven league appearances. He was freed
from Palace and signed for Southend United FC on 20 August 1990,
making 248 league appearances, scoring three times, earning
successive promotions, before transferring to Derby County FC for £750,000 on 31 January 1996,
scoring once in 91 league appearances, again winning promotion. Signed for Charlton Athletic FC for £825,000 on 22 June 1998. He
made 200 league appearances, scoring once, earning a relegation
and a promotion, before leaving on loan
to West Ham United FC in September 2004, signing in December 2004. He
made 36 Championship appearances, again he was part of a successful
promotion campaign.
Powell then returned to Charlton Athletic FC on 11 July 2005. Making
25 Premier League appearances, scoring once. He then
signed for Premier League new boys Watford FC on 30 June 2006, to make
fifteen Premier League appearances. In July
2007, Powell returned to Charlton Athletic FC, primarily as coach, but
made seventeen Championship appearances, scoring once.
Powell joined League Two side AFC Bournemouth on a trial basis in July
2008, but joined Leicester City FC on a six-month contract on 23 August 2008. and
another contract in January 2009 to extend his stay to the end of the
season. After gaining promotion, he signed for another season, becoming
the clubs' player-coach, he completed nineteen league appearances
before retiring with 655 league appearances. |

Management Career |

Powell's first experience as manager was in a caretaker capacity
of Leicester City FC, his one match in charge was won in October 2010,
before Sven-Göran Eriksson was was appointed manager. On 14 January
2011, Powell was appointed manager of Charlton Athletic FC, bringing them
up into the Championship in his first full season in charge, he was sacked
on 11 March 2014. 3 September 2014 saw Powell take up the managership at
Huddersfield Town AFC, until he was sacked on 4 November 2015. He returned
to football on 27 May 2016, when he was appointed Nigel Pearson's
assistant at Derby County FC. He took over as caretaker manager from 27
September after Pearson was suspended and then sacked. Powell then became
Steve McClaren's assistant on 12 October 2016, and left when both were
sacked on 12 March 2017. On 23 January 2018, Powell returned to Roots Hall
when he was put in charge of Southend United FC |
