Obituary
"FORMER ENGLAND GOALKEEPER—DEATH AT CRESWELL OF ERNALD SCATTERGOOD
"Ernald Scattergood, a former England, Derby County and Bradford goal-keeper, died at his home, Mowan-street, Creswell, on Saturday, at the age of 45 years. A native of Riddings, Scattergood began his football career with Riddings St. James. He afterwards assisted Ripley Athletic, and it was from that team that Jimmy Methven, then manager of Derby County, secured his transfer for £11. Scattergood remained with Derby County for five years, and it was during this period that he was capped for England, against Wales, at Bristol, in March, 1913. Derby transferred him to Bradford, to whom he gave 10 years' service. Scattergood went to Creswell five years ago in the role of cricketer, being wicket-keeper and a steady bat. He assisted Croswell Colliery in many Bassetlaw League games. He leaves a widow and one son, who shows much of his father's skill as a goalkeeper, having been on trial with Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers." - The Nottingham Evening Post/Sheffield Independent, Monday, 4 July 1932

"ERNALD SCATTERGOOD—Death of Former England Goalkeeper at Creswell.—Riddings and Ripley Associations.
"Mr. Ernald Scattergood, the former England, Derby County and Bradford Park Avenue goalkeeper, died on Saturday at the age of 45. He had been ill over two years, but was able to go out in his bath chair up to Wednesday week. He had a heart attack, however, on Friday, and passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning at his residence, Morden Street, Creswell. He leaves a widow and one son, Kenneth.
"A native of Riddings, Mr. Scattergood showed early promise of developing the skill and brilliance which won him fame as a goalkeeper in after years. He first played with Riddings St. James', and was transferred by them to Ripley Athletic. He attracted the attention of Jimmy Methven, the then manager of the Derby County F.C., who eventually secured his services for £11.
"In an article under the title 'Forty Years In Football,' Methven wrote: 'The first of the Derby County goalkeepers I had dealings with in the managerial capacity was Scattergood (known as 'Scat'). He was playing with Ripley Athletic when I secured him, the huge amount of money involved in transfer fees being £1 to 'Scat' and £10 to the Ripley Club. Ernald played some wonderful games for us, but one of his finest displays was against the Rams and not for us. He went from Derby to Bradford, and when he came with the Park Avenue boys, at a time when the County were desperately in need of points, gave such a brilliant exhibition that, although our lads played well enough to win handsomely, they were beaten. 'Scat' had come to the Baseball ground with the intention of showing us how foolish we had been to part with him. Tom Maley, who was then manager of the Park Avenue Club said Scattergood was one of his soundest investments.'
"
Scattergood was capped against Wales in March, 1913, and obtained his inter-League cap the same season. He left Derby for Bradford in 1914, but on the outbreak of war returned to Riddings, and in 1917 enlisted in the R.G.A. He served in France for over a year. On leaving the army he resumed his connection with the Bradford Club, and left there about seven years ago. With the exception of a short period, during which he worked at Ollerton, Scattergood had resided at Creswell ever since.
"His son, Kenneth, has had trials with Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton, and last season played for the Wolves Reserves in the final of the Stafford County Cup.
"At Creswell, Scattergood was wicket-keeper for the Colliery C.C. until overtaken by illness, and was a reliable bat. In his younger days he kept wicket for Riddings St. James' C.C. for nearly 20 years, and while at Bradford rendered similar service to the Aughton and Clayton Clubs in the Bradford League..."
