Wembley's Empire Stadium became established as the Football Association's preferred home venue for England matches from the 1953-54 season, after they had previously toured the country on an annual basis. The national team had been using Chelsea FC's Stamford Bridge ground for training in the days leading up to a full international at Wembley, but the Bank of England Sports Centre at Roehampton in Wandsworth, southwest London, offered more facilities, and it was there that England were based in the weeks leading up to their World Cup triumph in July 1966, following a ten-day stay at the National Recreation Centre at Lilleshall in Shropshire in early June.

By the mid-1980s, Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre in Berkshire was providing training facilities for full international England squads, whilst Lilleshall National Sports Centre became the home of the Football Association's School of Excellence for England's new under-16 team. 16 international matches were played there between 1986 and 2000. The school closed in 1999, to be replaced by Premier League academies, and the FA set about building their own National Football Centre at St George's Park at Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire, with a hotel on-site. After several delays due to rising costs, it finally opened in 2012, and became the regular training venue for each of the youth levels between under-15 and under-21, as well as the full international squads. The younger levels began to use the centre for all of their home international matches, but all youth levels have played there on occasion, with some games being played on indoor pitches. The FA also used Burton Albion FC's nearby Pirelli Stadium on 19 occasions between 2009 and 2018, mostly for under-17 internationals.

By taking these fixtures in-house, the FA have avoided the loss-making youth internationals that were being played on league grounds up and down the country in front of small crowds. Security is tight, and only selected media and family members are allowed in to watch the games. Player agents are not allowed in. Games are often filmed, but never live-streamed. St George's Park is also occasionally used for training games with club youth teams. This was particularly prevalent during the Covid period between 2020 and 2021. It has also been used by foreign club and international teams when visiting England.

The first of the England games below was a last-minute switch from Walsall FC's Banks's Stadium which was declared unfit after a snowfall. Some matches have been classified as Training Camp Games, whereby they were of a non-standard duration (e.g. four quarters of thirty minutes each), or a substituted player came back on to the field, later in the game, as a substitute. Penalty shootouts often took place at the end of a game, even when it had not resulted in a draw.

Unfortunately, like all England matches, the FA (and probably most clubs in the United Kingdom) do not see it as their duty to accurately report on the games that they are responsible for organising, especially at youth levels, where their reports are hastily written, often by people that have not watched the match(!), and are, subsequently missing vital information, such as named captains, complete substitution details, and even the fact that a penalty shootout has taken place, let alone the details of it, amidst simple inaccuracies such as mis-spelt player names. It is obvious that details are rarely checked or corrected, once the initial report has gone out (which would surely be the advantage of hosting it on a webpage!). More accurate information can be found elsewhere, and we strive to collate it for this site. Sadly, however, this lack of a definitive, official source means that we can never be 100% certain that we have captured all of the details.
