Manchester United had amazingly formed a title challenge, just a year
after the Munich air disaster had claimed eight of their first-team
squad, with another two never playing again. Defending champions,
Wolves, however, could not be stopped, and they gave their retiring
England captain, Billy Wright the perfect send-off by winning their
last four games without conceding a goal.

Wednesday would go on to take the title by two points to cement their
immediate return to the top flight after a season's exile.

The top two each secured their promotion, two weeks later, but
Plymouth went on to snatch the title, despite having fewer games to
play at this point, and adapted better to life in the second division,
whilst Hull came straight back down to the third, a year later.
