Though they were still top on goal average, Tottenham had gone four
games without a win at a crucial stage of the season, and they were to
lose their next two home games. Wolves, meanwhile, avoided losing
three players to the international by putting their home game with
West Ham back a couple of days, and promptly beat them 5-0. Having
also beaten Burnley, 6-1 in the previous week, and having a Wembley FA
Cup Final to look forward to, they were confident of securing a
hat-trick of league titles and also winning the double, yet it was the
Lancashire club who pipped them by a point to the championship.
