season, against Germany on 7 October 2000.
Diary
Monday, 7
August 2000 -
Kevin Keegan has
criticised the £10 fee to watch England's World Cup qualifier against
Finland on television. In an interview, he said that everyone should
have a right to see the game. "I think it should be available to
everybody - and I do feel that about all the major events." The FA
have admitted they are powerless to prevent an England game from being
shown on a pay-per-view channel for the first time. But Keegan said it
was up to the Finnish FA to decide what to do with the match rights.
The independent u>direct, whose sports and film services are supported
by Sky Digital, are believed to have spent in the region of £1m to
secure the live rights from the Finnish FA.
Thursday, 28
September 2000 -
Kevin Keegan names his
27-man squad for the World Cup preliminary matches against Germany and Finland
next month.
Saturday, 7 October 2000 - In the final match at Wembley Stadium before
the bulldozers move in, England lose to Germany and in response, from
the dressing room toilet, Kevin Keegan hands in his resignation. There
are also several injuries reported, namely David
Beckham's knee, Graeme Le Saux's calf, Tony Adam's back and Gary Neville's toe.
Paul Ince also withdraws from the squad to be with his wife who is in
labour with their child.
Sunday, 8
October 2000 - England, along with stand-in boss Howard
Wilkinson, arrive at their Buckinghamshire headquarters still reeling
from Keegan's resignation. Wilkinson appeals to those around him to
rally around, as he brings in Brian Kidd into the coaching set-up.
Bobby Robson admits that if he is asked, he will return to assist
England.
Monday,
9 October 2000 - Martin Keown is England's new captain taking
the armband from his absent Arsenal colleague Tony Adams.
Tuesday,
10 October 2000 - The Football Association form a six-man
think-tank to help select a new national coach who also must groom a
successor.
