Diary
Friday,
23 February 2001 - Spain coach
Jose
Antonio Camacho announces an
eighteen-man squad on Friday for the
friendly match against England at Villa Park on Wednesday.
The Spanish first division's top scorer
Javi Moreno of Alaves and young defender Unai Bergara of Villarreal were named
in Spain's squad for the first time.
Moreno has
impressed this season, notching 16 league goals for the modest Basque side who
reached the last eight of the UEFA Cup with a 2-0 over Italian giants Inter
Milan on Thursday. Barcelona playmaker Pep Guardiola
returns to midfield after recovering from injury, while the in-form Victor of
Deportivo Coruna gets a recall along with his team mate Enrique Romero. Real Oviedo keeper Esteban has been
displaced by Valencia's Santiago Canizares who will line up alongside Real
Madrid's Iker Casillas. Canizares has been instrumental in Valencia's miserly
defence that conceded only 16 league goals this season.
Up front, Camacho has kept faith with
the Athletic Bilbao pairing of Ismael Urzaiz and Joseba Etxeberria who will join
the ever-present Raul and debutant Moreno. Celta Vigo's Brazilian-born striker
Catanha, who has been in inconsistent form, and Real Madrid pair Pedro Munitis
and Guti, who have been unable to hold down places in their side, are among
eight players left out of the squad from Spain's 2-1 defeat in a friendly last
November against the Netherlands.
Monday, 26
February 2001 - Captain Fernando Hierro was withdrawn from the squad
after FIFA told the Spanish FA that he had to serve a one-game ban for his
sending-off in Spain's last game, against Netherlands in November. Paco, of Real
Zaragoza has replaced him.
