Diary
Tuesday, 4 May 2021 -
Teams will be allowed to
select a 26-player squad instead of 23 at this summer's delayed European
Championship Finals. The change has been implemented to lessen the load on
players after a club season compressed because of the coronavirus
pandemic. It will also help managers adapt if outbreaks occur during the
tournament.
Wednesday, 2 June 2021 - Italy took their Euro 2020 squad
announcement to a whole new level with a two hour television show
dedicated to Roberto Mancini's unveiling of his 26-man squad for this
summer's tournament. Sassuolo's uncapped Giacomo Raspadori was a surprise
call-up. From playing padel with frying pans, to a rap battle between
players before the entire squad sang Italy's national anthem, this was an
announcement like no other. The squad will be based at Il Centro
Tecnico Federale di Coverciano, te central training found of the Italian
Football Federation, in Florence.
Friday, 4 June 2021 - Italy 4 Czech Republic 0 - Italy brushed
aside the Czech Republic in their final Euro 2020 warm-up game in Bologna
for an eighth consecutive win without conceding a goal. Ciro Immobile
drilled in their opener before Nicolo Berella scored their second,
courtesy of a huge deflection, after a run from the halfway line. Lorenzo
Insigne, on his 30th birthday, swept home from Immobile's pass. Insigne
then picked out Domenico Berardi in space and the striker chipped in a
fourth. Barardi's Sassoulo team-mate Giacomo Raspadori came on for his
international debut with twelve minutes to go.
Friday, 11 June 2021 - Turkey 0 England 3 - Euro 2020 opened in
spectacular fashion as Italy got their campaign off to an impressive start
in front of their own fans with a comfortable victory over Turkey. Once
the rescheduled tournament finally began, an own goal by Merih Demiral and
strikes by Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne settled the one-sided Group A
match. The first of 51 fixtures across eleven European cities over the
next month. It is the first time Italy have scored three goals in a
European Championship Finals match and are unbeaten in 28 matches, since
Portugal beat them in September 2018.
Wednesday, 16 June 2021 - Italy 3 Switzerland 0 - In-form Italy
became the first team to reach the knockout stage with another impressive
showing in victory over Switzerland. Roberto Mancini's side made it back
to back 3-0 wins courtesy of another sprightly performance in Rome.
Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli scored twice, first by finishing off
a move he started by tapping in from Domenico's Berardi's darting run and
cutback. Italy's passing and pressing was far superior to their opponents
and Locatelli's fizzing strike from the edge of the area underlined their
control of the contest. Lazio strike Ciro Immobile's long-range drive,
which squeezed under goalkeeper Yann Sommer, completed a comprehensive
victory late on.
Sunday, 20 June 2021 - Italy 1 Wales 0 - Wales demonstrated great
resolve in defeat against Italy as they clung on with ten men for a result
which was enough to secure their own place in the knockout phase of Euro
2020. Wales withstood relentless Italian pressure to scrape through in
second place on goal difference. Italy made eight changes to their
team but were still dominant. Matteo Pessina's goal giving them a 1-0
half-time lead which scarcely reflected their superiority. They have now
gone thirty matches unbeaten, equalling their national record
(set between 1935-39), and kept clean sheets in the last eleven
(the record is twelve between 1972 and 1974).
Saturday, 26 June 2021 - Italy 2 Austria 1 - Italy needed extra
time to see off battling Austria at Wembley to set up a Euro 2020
quarter-final with Belgium or Portugal. It was Austria's first appearance
in the knockout phase of the European Championship and put in a tireless
performance, so much so that when Saša Kalajdžić pulled a
goal back for Austria, it was the first goal Italy have conceded in twelve
matches. However, Italy did set a new national record by going on 31
matches unbeaten when goals from substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo
Pessina sent Italy through. Roberto Mancini has got Italy believing again,
but will need to play better if they are to progress. Chiesa's goal
ensured he joined his father, Enrico, in scoring at the European
Championship Finals. The first father and son to do so.
Friday, 2 July 2021 - Belgium 1 Italy 2 -
Italy set-up a Euro 202 semi-final match with Spain after edging an
exhilarating tie with Belgium in Munich.
Italy have been arguably the best team of the Tournament so far
and Belgium are the number one ranked team in the world. The two
Azzurri's goals - which took the team to thirteen
consecutive wins and 32 games without defeat - were of the highest
quality. Nicolo Barella wriggled through three defenders before drilling
in the opener and Lorenzo Insigne ran from the halfway line before curling
in one of the goals of the tournament. Belgium were given hope late in the
first half when Giovanni di Lorenzo fouled Jeremy Doku and Romelu Lukaku
scored the penalty. Italy must play their next match without Leonardo
Spinazzola, who was stretchered off late on. They have now gone 32-matches
unbeaten.
Tuesday, 6 July 2021 - Italy 1
Spain 1 -
Italy beat Spain on penalties in their twelfth Major Tournament semi-final
to reach the Euro 2020 Final after an enthralling semi-final at Wembley.
After Alvaro Morata's penalty was saved, Jorginho strolled up to score and
set up a final with either England or Denmark in London on Sunday.
Federico Chiesa looked as if he had sent Italy to the final in normal time
with a delightful curled finish to cap off a quicker counter. But Morata
stepped off the bench to slot an equaliser with ten minutes to go after a
one-two with Dani Olmo. However' the Juventus forward's penalty miss
proved costly as Spain failed to advance from a semi-final for the first
time in their history.
