All information is complete
to and including England's last match, the nineteenth of the 2020-21 season, against
Denmark on 7 July 2021
Diary
Tuesday, 4 May 2021 - Teams will be allowed to
select a 26-player squad instead of 23 at this summer's delayed European
Championship Finals. The change has been implemented to lessen the load on
players after a club season compressed because of the coronavirus
pandemic. It will also help managers adapt if outbreaks occur during the
tournament.
Tuesday, 25 May 2021 - Gareth Southgate
has selected a 33-man provisional squad for the 2020 European
Championship Finals to join up this weekend for preparations for the
Tournament starting next month. There are first call-ups for Aaron
Ramsdale, goalkeeper at relegated Sheffield United, and two defenders,
Ben Godfrey and Brighton's Ben White. There is also a recall for
Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold. But there is still no place for
Leeds United's inform striker, Patrick Bamford.
Saturday, 29 May
2021 - The England squad, with the exception of the Manchester
City and Chelsea players, who are participating in the Champions
League Final in Porto, arrive at their North-East training base in
Hurworth-on-Tees. Their facilities, at Rockcliffe Hall, is the training
base of Middlesbrough FC.
Sunday, 30 May 2021 & Monday, 31 May 2021 -
The England squad, excluding those players in the Champions
League, are involved in training in the sunshine at Rockcliffe. Those
missing players will join up with the squad on Friday and will
probably miss the match against Romania.
Tuesday, 1 June
2021 - Manchester United have confirmed that Mason Greenwood
has withdrawn from the provisional squad due to an underlying injury.
Twenty of the squad are out training at Rockcliffe. Jadon Sancho
misses out because of a throat infection.
5.00pm - With usual pomp and
ceremony, the European Championship squad is revealed, along with the
squad numbers. The six losing out are the three debutant call-ups
Aaron Ramsdale, Ben Godfrey and Ben White, as well Jesse Lingard,
James Ward-Prowse and Ollie Watkins.
Wednesday, 2 June 2021 - Early team
news confirms that Jordan Henderson will not start tonight, but will
be involved at some point. Jadon Sancho is still poorly with a throat
infection. Southgate also confirms that Jack Grealish's workload needs
to be managed. England 1 Austria 0 -
England's countdown to the Euro's continued with a narrow win
over Austria at Riverside Stadium - but they suffered an injury
setback as Liverpool defender Trent Alexander Arnold limped off late
on. Southgate saw his experimental side secure victory when Arsenal
teenager Bukayo Saka crowned a fine move with an angled finish for his
first international goal after 56 minutes. Southgate's main concern is
the injury picked up by Terence Trent-Arnold towards the end.
Thursday, 3 June
2021 - It has now confirmed that the injury received by Terence
Alexander-Arnold towards the end of last night's match was a tear inn
his thigh muscle, ruling him out of the 2020 European Championship
Finals. Southgate will not confirm his replacement until after
Sunday's friendly match. The Manchester United players, Harry
Maguire, Luke Shaw, Dean Henderson and Marcus Rashford, have joined
up with the England players at Rockcliffe Park.
Sunday, 6 June
2021 - England 1 Romania 0 - England concluded their
preparations for the Euros with a victory. Gareth Southgate once again
selected an experimental starting XI which included three players who
are not named in the final squad, White, Godfrey and Ward-Prowse.
England posed the greater attacking threat with both Dominic Calvert-Lewin
and Jadon Sancho hitting the crossbar in the first half, before Marcus
Rashford put them ahead from the penalty spot in the 68th minute after
another foul on Jack Grealish. Sam Johnstone won his first cap in goal
with a sound performance. Jordan Henderson appeared for the second
half for his first senior football since February, but failed to
convert a penalty-kick that was awarded following a foul on Dominic
Calvert-Lewin.
Monday, 7 June 2021 -
Brighton defender Ben White has been called up to replace
Trent Alexander-Arnold on England's Euro 2020 squad. The 23-year old
made his debut in last week's 1-0 friendly win over Austria, the same
match in which Alexander-Arnold was injured. White started alongside
Mings in yesterday's victory over Romania. Gareth Southgate took his
time to decide which of his standby players would come in as a
replacement. White had never been involved in an England squad at any
level before his recent call-up to the senior side.
Tuesday, 8 June 2021 - Shortly after
arriving back at basecamp, St. George's Park, each of the 26 players
in the squad receive a commemorative legacy cap to mark their unique
place in England's history. The cap, is red, with their 'legacy'
number on the rim.
Wednesday, 9 June 2021 - Their is a
full training session for 25 of the squad. Harry Maguire continuing to
do a personal session in the gym.
Thursday, 10 June 2021 - All 26 members of the squad are
involved in today's training session.
Saturday, 12 June 2021 - Dean
Henderson is the only member of the squad not involved in training
today. Harry Maguire was involved in training but still seems unlikely
to feature against Croatia tomorrow. the evening's press conference
featuring Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane has been postponed in light
of the tragic incident involving Christian Eriksen in the Denmark vs.
Finland match, only moments before the appointed time in front of the
media.
Sunday,
13 June 2021 - England 1 Croatia 0 - England's Euro 2020
campaign got off to a winning start as Raheem Sterling's goal secured
victory over Croatia at Wembley. Sterling repaid Southgate's faith in
him, sliding in the winner after 57 minutes following a perfect pass
from man-of-the-match Kalvin Phillips. England nearly took an early
lead when Phil Foden struck the post. Jordan Pickford was barely
tested by a disappointing Croatia side.
Monday, 14 June 2021 - The Squad are
back out training. Fourteen players are involved in the main session,
with yesterday's starting XI doing a recovery session. Dean Henderson
is working individually indoors.
Tuesday, 15 June 2021 - Dean
Henderson withdraws from the squad because of his ongoing hip injury,
that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout
the tournament. He will return to Manchester United for further
assessment. He his replaced in the Euro 2020 squad by Sheffield
United's Aaron Ramsdale, who was a member of Gareth Southgate's
provisional squad. He will follow standard Covid19 testing protocol
before entering St. George's Park. The England squad report to
training. Only 24 participate with Aaron Ramsdale yet to arrive and
Jack Grealish working on an individual personalised programme.
Thursday, 17 June
2021 - Defender Harry Maguire says he is fit and available for
England's second Group D match against Scotland tomorrow. The
Manchester United captain has been sidelined for over a month because
of an ankle ligament injury. "I feel good. I'm back available, been
training and looking forward to it. I've done a few sessions now and
feel like my fitness is there, so I'm available for the game."
Maguire is one of the 26 members who are training today. The
first time all members of the England squad are involved.
Friday, 18 June
2021 - England 0 Scotland 0 - England and Scotland played out a
goalless draw at Wembley to leave both countries with their hopes of
reaching the knockout stage very much alive. The first meeting between
the two sides in a major tournament since 1996 was played in a
typically raucous atmosphere despite only 22,500 fans in attendance -
with both sides having their opportunities to win. England should have
taken an early lead when John Stones headed Mason Mount's corner onto
the post. Scotland settled and improved and had Jordan Pickford make a
superb save from Stephen O'Donnell.
Saturday, 19 June 2021 - The England
squad return to training in the afternoon at Tottenham Hotspur's
Training Centre in Enfield. The fourteen players who did not play
yesterday are training outdoors. The eleven starters, and Jack
Grealish, are training indoors.
Monday, 21 June 2021 - Scotland's
Billy Gilmour has tested positive for Covid19 and will miss the final
group game with Croatia. As a consequence, England's Ben Chilwell and
Mason Mount have to self-isolate as a precaution after they were seen
hugging and speaking with Gilmour following the match between the
countries on Friday night. The pair could miss tomorrow night's final
group game with Czech Republic. The entire England squad had lateral
flow tests today and all were negative. The FA said it would hold
further talks with Public Health England before taking further action.
"The pair will be kept away from the rest of the England players and
wider support team, pending further discussions with PHE. We will
continue to follow all Covid19 protocols and the UEFA testing regime,
while remaining in close contact with the PHE."
Austria 0 Ukraine 1 & Belgium 2 Finland
0/Denmark 4 Russia 1 - These results in tonight's round of
games ensure that England have qualified for the next stage of the
competition. Even if they lose tomorrow night, they will progress as
the bet third-placed team. However, a win will ensure they qualify as
group winners and play their round of sixteen match at Wembley in
eight days time. A draw will see them play in Copenhagen next
Monday.
Tuesday
morning, 22 June 2021 - It has been confirmed that Ben Chilwell
and Mason Mount must isolate upto and including 28 June. The decision
was taken in consultation with Public Health England.
Tuesday evening, Czech Republic 0 England 1
- Raheem Sterling's second goal of Euro 2020 saw England beat
Czech Republic to win the group and set up a last-16 tie at Wembley.
In a performance that developed into a slog after a bright start,
Sterling converted at the far post in the 12th minute from Jack
Grealish's cross after fine work from Arsenal's Bukayo Saka.
Wednesday, 23 June
2021 - Germany will face England in the last 16 after twice
coming from behind to knock battling Hungary out of the tournament.
Thursday, 24 June
2021 - The squad are back at St. George's Park and 23 of the
squad are on the pitch training. Harry Maguire is working on an
individual training programme indoors.
Friday, 25 June 2021 - Harry Maguire
is back with the squad training in St. George's Park. Mason Mount and
Ben Chilwell continue to work on their own personal programmes.
Tuesday, 29 June
2021 - England 2 Germany 0 -
England struck twice late on to end a 55-year wait for a knockout tie
victory over Germany amid scenes of huge tension and elation at
Wembley to reach the quarter-finals.
Gareth Southgate's side battled hard to earn the statement victory
that has so often eluded England, and it was their talisman of this
tournament, Raheem Sterling, who made the decisive
breakthrough.
Sterling steered in Luke Shaw's cross after 75 minutes to send
England's fans, with more than 40,000 inside Wembley, into wild
celebrations.
The
win was secured with another moment of significance four minutes from
time when captain Harry Kane, who had once again struggled to
influence the game, headed in from substitute Jack Grealish's perfect
delivery for his first goal of Euro 2020.
England were again thankful for the brilliance of Everton goalkeeper
Jordan Pickford, who has yet to concede a goal in the tournament and
saved crucially from Timo Werner and Kai Havertz in each half, while
Thomas Muller missed a glorious chance to equalise before Kane struck.
Wednesday, 30 June 2021 -
England fans tempted to travel from the UK to Italy have been told to
'watch from home' - and players will have to 'make their own
atmosphere' in the Olympic Stadium. Travel restrictions mean most fans
will not be able to attend as Italy is on UK's amber list, and all UK
arrivals must isolate for five days.
Thursday, 1 July 2021 - England
players are training behind closed doors at St. George's Park today.
Friday, 2 July
2021 - All 26 members of the England squad are involved in
training this morning, before they all leave for Rome in the
afternoon. Bukayo Saka took a slight knock in training and will
be assessed tomorrow.
Saturday, 3 July 2021 - Ukraine 0 England 4
- England produced a magnificent display as they thrashed
Ukraine in Rome to set up a Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark at
Wembley. Gareth Southgate's side followed up the landmark victory over
Germany in the last 16 by producing a performance of composure and the
highest quality to continue their impressive progress in the
tournament. Harry Kane was back to his predatory best after struggling
in the group stage by poking home a superb pass from Raheem Sterling
after only four minutes. Ukraine barely threatened England, were on
their way to their second successive tournament semi-final when Harry
Maguire powered home a header from Luke Shaw's free-kick seconds into
the second half. The outstanding Shaw was the creator once more four
minutes later with a perfect cross that was headed in from six yards
by Harry Kane. England were so impressive as they simply overpowered
Ukraine with substitute Jordan Henderson getting the fourth - his
first international goal, in his 62nd appearance - when he arrived
with perfect timing to head in Mason Mount's corner. To add to the
satisfaction, they kept their fifth successive clean sheet to maintain
their record of not conceding a goal at the Tournament.
Sunday, 4 July
2021 - The England team arrive back at St. George's Park in the
early hours of this morning, ahead of a day of recovery.
Monday, 5 July
2021 - All 26 members of the England squad are training.
Tuesday, 6 July
2021 - All 26 member of the squad are again out in training
before leaving for Watford on the evening. They will be staying at The
Grove, a luxury hotel in Rickmansworth.
Wednesday, 7 July 2021 - England 2
Denmark 1 - England's 55-year
wait to reach a major Final is over at last with victory over Denmark,
on a night of nerve-shredding tension then unconfined joy at Wembley.
Gareth Southgate's men were on a mission to travel one step further
than any England side had done since the 1966 World Cup final against
West Germany, and they finally achieved the long-cherished goal as
they came from behind to triumph in extra-time. They had to fight
victory after conceding their first goal of the tournament to Mikkel
Damsgaard's stunning free-kick after thirty minutes. England replied
quickly when Denmark captain Simon Kjaer turned in Bukayo Saka's cross
six minutes before the break. Kasper Schmeichel was Denmark's hero as
the hosts sought the winner, saving brilliantly from Harry Maguire and
Harry Kane as the game went into extra-time. Raheem Sterling was
fouled by Joakim Mæhle to award England a penalty, checked by VAR, to
lead to Schmeichel saving Kane's penalty, only for the rebound to fall
at Kane's feet for him to slot home the winner.
Thursday, 8 July
2021 - UEFA has charged England after a laser pointer was
pointed at Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel during last-nights
semi-final. Television pictures showed a green light on Schmeichel's
face just before Harry Kane took his extra-time penalty. England are
also charged with 'causing a disturbance' during Denmark's national
anthem and setting off fireworks. The FA and UEFA officials searched
for the source of the laser pointer during extra time, but were unable
to find those responsible. The Danish FA were asked if they wanted to
make an official complaint, but said they did not want to take the
matter further. Thirteen players are taking part in training this
afternoon with both Jack Grealish and Jordan Henderson joining last
nights starting XI working indoors.
Friday, 9 July 2021 - The England
squad are back out training at St. George's Park, however, Phil Foden
picks up a 'minor knock.
Saturday, 10 July 2021 - The final
training session at St. George's Park is attended by 25 of the 26
squad members, with Phil Foden sitting out. The team then make their
way to the The Grove Hotel in Watford.
Sunday, 11 July 2021 - England
lose their penalty-kick shoot-out with Italy to become runners-up of
the 2020 European Championship. It is England's bester finish to
the European-based tournament.
Tuesday, 13 July 2021 - UEFA have charged England on four
different offences relating to fan misbehaviour following the 2020
European Championship 2020. Invasion of the
field of play by its supporters - Article 16(2)(a) of the UEFA
Disciplinary Regulations (DR); Throwing of objects by its supporters -
Article 16(2)(b) DR; Disturbance caused by its supporters during the
national anthem - Article 16(2)(g) DR; Lighting of a firework by its
supporters - Article 16(2)(c) DR. UEFA added: "The case will be dealt
with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due
course. Separately, and in accordance with Article 31(4) DR, a UEFA
Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to conduct a
disciplinary investigation into events involving supporters which
occurred inside and around the stadium. Information on this matter
will be made available in due course." thousands of England fans
congregated in public spaces around London from midday onwards on
Sunday, including Leicester Square in the centre of the capital. But
some of the most troubling scenes occurred around Wembley itself,
where fans without tickets were filmed entering the stadium and
clashing with stewards who tried to restrict entry. There were also
claims that supporters who did have tickets were prevented from taking
their allocated seats. The FA in a statement dubbed the
incidents "entirely unacceptable", while labelling the individuals
involved "an embarrassment to the England team".
Monday, 18 October
2021 - England have been ordered to play their next UEFA
competition game behind closed doors - with one more game suspended
for a probationary period of two years - after crowd trouble inside
and outside the National Stadium. The ban applies only to European
competition, and not FIFA World Cup qualifiers, will be in place for
England's next UEFA Nations League game in June 2022. The Football
Association were also fined €100,000 (£84,560) for 'the invasion of the
field of play, for throwing of objects and for the disturbances during
the national anthems'.
