Description
Blue long-sleeved shirts with wing collars and two white buttons, with white double-stripe sleeve trim, with a single red stripe between, yellow Admiral logo on right breast and emblem on left breast. White number one on the reverse in the same font as the outfield shirt numbers.
Variations
  • For the last two games in which this shirt was worn, a different font was used for the number on the goalkeeper's jersey, to match that of the outfield shirts (the number one had a 'flick' at the top of it).

  • For the last three games in which this shirt was worn, it was worn with the 1974 yellow goalkeeping kit's black shorts and socks. For the first three games, Ray Clemence had worn it with the same shorts and socks as the outfield players.

  • Ray Clemence wore a red number in the two games played in 1977.

  • Joe Corrigan wore a red number in the last match in which this shirt was worn, against Australia.

Appearances

3 - Ray Clemence

  • Each game was a friendly international, apart from two games in the American Bicentennial Tournament, one of which was an unofficial international against the hosts (and, therefore, not included here).

For the first two games in which the blue shirt was worn, plus the final game of the American Bicentennial Tournament (vs. Team America in Philadelphia on 31/05/76), Ray Clemence wore the same shorts and socks as the outfield players. When Joe Corrigan and Peter Shilton wore the blue shirt, they wore the black shorts and socks from the 1974 yellow kit. This may have prompted a variation to the blue jersey, which appeared in 1981.

The 1976 version had two white stripes and a red stripe down the arms, complementing the red, white and blue shorts and socks.  However, the black shorts and socks from the 1974 yellow uniform had yellow stripes.

A new version was introduced in 1981. Instead of the white and red stripes down the arms, it had two yellow and black stripes, thus matching the black shorts and socks.

The jersey above was worn by Joe Corrigan against Brazil and is part of the Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection (picture courtesy Simon Shakeshaft).
