For
the first two games in which the blue shirt was worn, plus the final game of
the American Bicentennial Tournament (vs. Team America in Philadelphia on
31/05/76), Ray Clemence wore the same shorts and socks as the outfield
players. When Joe Corrigan and Peter Shilton wore the blue shirt, they wore the black
shorts and socks from the
1974 yellow
kit. This may have prompted a
variation to the blue jersey, which appeared in 1981.
The
1976 version had two white stripes and a red stripe down the arms,
complementing the red, white and blue shorts and socks. However, the
black shorts and socks from the 1974 yellow uniform had yellow stripes.
A
new version was introduced in 1981. Instead of the white and red stripes
down the arms, it had two yellow and black stripes, thus matching the black
shorts and socks.
