2 - Peter Shilton
(plus four in a shootout)
-
Shilton faced his first
shootout, against West Germany and could not prevent any of the kicks.
Gary Lineker later admitted that he had advised Shilton to wait for the
kicks to be taken before diving, because so many had been sent straight
down the middle during the tournament. Three nights later, Shilton
conceded his last goal for England, from the spot, against Italy.

Captains |
2 -
Peter Shilton
-
Shilton was captain for the
15th time for his 125th and final appearance. He initially wore the
armband in this kit against Egypt, following Bryan Robson's injury.
Terry Butcher then took the armband, before retiring from international
football and he did not play in the World Cup's third place play-off.
Shilton, thus, skippered England in seven World Cup finals games.
|
This
kit signalled the end of Peter Shilton's record-breaking
international career and also the battle for his successor between
Chris Woods and David Seaman.
In
his 125 appearances, Shilton wore 15 different England goalkeeping
kits.
Chris Woods was initially the number one choice to
replace Shilton, as Graham Taylor became manager, but he was keen to give
David Seaman a chance. Seaman played against Ireland, but Taylor had his
doubts, stating that "He's a first-class goalkeeper playing out of his skin,
but we have to find out if he can handle big games like this." There was a
feeling that Seaman was too quiet and not commanding his defenders.
Nevertheless he was good enough to win the League Championship with Arsenal.
After a short period alternating the 'keepers,
Taylor finally settled on Woods, who had returned to England from
Rangers to join Sheffield Wednesday at the beginning of the 1991-92
season. He also went on England's end-of-season summer tour to
Australasia and Malaysia, whilst Seaman was rested at home.
