This smart new England kit heralded the beginning
of the 1990s and it was to take its place in the renaissance of English
football..
The 1980s had seen the national game sink to an
all-time low, with hooliganism and disasters driving people away. England's
performances in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, which saw them reaching the
semi-finals for the first time on foreign soil, all the while displaying a great
fighting spirit, catapulted English football onto the front pages of national
newspapers. The 1980s had seen the national game sink to an

performances in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, which saw them reaching the
semi-finals for the first time on foreign soil, all the while displaying a great
fighting spirit, catapulted English football onto the front pages of national
newspapers.
Paul Gascoigne's tears after England's agonising
defeat was the abiding memory for a new army of fans. The cobwebs of recent
history were blown away as English clubs were allowed back into European
competitions following a five-year ban and the wave of optimism continued with
the foundation of the Premier League in 1992.
England bade farewell to Bobby Robson, and Graham
Taylor took over the helm. It was a struggle to reach the European Championship
finals in Sweden, and once again, the continent's major tournament couldn't
bring out the best in England. Taylor found himself managing a transitional
period for the national side, with the international retirements of key players
such as Lineker, Butcher and Robson coinciding with a serious injury to the
rising star of Paul Gascoigne.
As Umbro prepared their latest design amongst the
growing fashion of football kit embellishments, the wheels were about to come
off Taylor's team bus before he'd even got into second gear...

The
shirts in the first two photos (top left) look identical, but the first (worn by
Gary Lineker against Brazil in 1990, the style's first full international
outing) has lower-case Umbro lettering (as in the first picture to the left of
this text) and the second (worn by Carlton Palmer in 1992) has upper-case Umbro
lettering (second picture to the left of this text). Both shirts appear by kind permission of the
Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
Next picture along is signed by Gary Lineker and
it is believed to have been worn against Poland in 1990. This shirt is part of
Richard Clarke's Morrell Collection. |

wore the 1990 red away shirts and socks with the blue home
shorts, against New Zealand. | England's
Under-21, Semi-Professional and B teams wore an identical kit to the full
international team. The Youth teams (Under-19s and below) wore the same
design, except that each wore an embroidered scroll below the emblem, within
which YOUTH was displayed, in navy blue, but when the Under-19s played in the
World Youth Championship in 1991, instead of the 'YOUTH' scroll, the following
was displayed below the emblem on the left breast (not actual font):
