Description
Light-blue shirts with navy blue zig-zag stripes from each shoulder down to the sides and down the sleeves. In between the outer zig-zag stripes is coloured a darker blue. Shadow pattern includes wide diagonal stripes rising from right to left, including parts of repeating large concentric diamonds, with a three-dimensional effect. Printing underneath each diamond section alternates between two versions of 'ENGLAND', one appearing in reverse i.e. as viewed through a mirror. Navy blue collar, edged with a thick light-blue stripe and a thin navy blue stripe. Navy blue cuffs and diamond-shaped elbow padding, with three concentric shadow-diamonds within. Embroidered emblem on left breast. Two embroidered white concentric diamonds on right breast, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised white lettering underneath and a registered trademark placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in white. Navy blue number one on reverse, with a light-blue border, outlined in navy blue. Navy blue shorts, with white drawstring, with a navy blue zig-zag stripe on left seam, surrounded by thick light-blue zig-zags. Two embroidered white concentric diamonds on left thigh, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised white lettering underneath and a registered trademark placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in yellow. Embroidered emblem on right thigh. Navy blue socks with sets of two light-blue concentric diamonds repeating around each turnover, edged with two light-blue hoops.
Variations
  • Nigel Martyn wore number 13 against Germany.

  • Against Sweden, 'EURO 92 SWEDEN' was displayed in white directly underneath the emblem. The number was also worn in the middle of the chest in navy blue, in the same font as on the reverse of the shirt, with a light-blue border, outlined in navy blue, and the player's surname was worn above the number on the reverse, in capitalised plain navy blue lettering.

  • For the last three matches in which this shirt was worn, the emblem was changed to accommodate a white margin around it and the number on the reverse of the shirt changed to the font used on the outfield players' shirts.

  • On the reverse of the shirt worn in the US Cup, MARTYN was printed above the number in capitalised plain navy blue lettering in a different font to that worn in the previous year's European Championship.

  • A light-blue number one in the same font as was to be used on England's 1993 white shirts, was worn on the right thigh of the shorts, above the emblem against Sweden.

  • Against Germany, on the right thigh of the shorts, to the left of the emblem, England wore light-blue numbers in the same font as on the reverse of the shirt.

Three months after the new yellow uniform was introduced, this all-blue change uniform appeared.  It was the same design as the yellow, orange and black outfit, but this uniform used three shades of blue instead, with the shorts and socks predominantly navy blue.

It was not the most successful kit as far as results were concerned, with no clean sheets and half of the games featuring damaging results. The first competitive fixture in the kit saw England exiting from the 1992 European Championship. In the following season, they surrendered a two-goal lead to the Netherlands, who came back to draw and the return fixture was probably the most traumatic with David Seaman conceding the two goals that virtually signalled an end to England's 1994 World Cup qualifying campaign. In-between, they lost to great rivals, Germany in Nigel Martyn's first full international, in the US Cup.

The photo of the number-one jersey above is of that worn by Chris Woods against Finland and appears here by kind permission of Simon Shakeshaft, curator of the National Football Shirt Collection at the England Match Shirts website. It is part of the Neville Evans Collection.
